Following the planets carefully from night to night shows how they move against the patterns formed by the much more distant stars. Here, Jupiter and Saturn happen to be in the same part of the sky and you can see how they track at different rates. We see them move against the background of constellations because they, and our observation platform, planet Earth, are speeding in orbit around the Sun.
